Start with trip length

Choose capacity around what you actually carry: water, food, layers, navigation, first aid and seasonal extras. Bigger is not automatically better.

Fit matters

Look for comfortable shoulder straps, a back panel suited to your torso and a sternum strap that can stabilize the load.

Water access

Compare bottle-pocket access and hydration-reservoir compatibility.

Organization

Extra pockets can help with small items, but too many compartments add complexity and weight.

Weather

For sustained rain, consider a pack cover or waterproof liner in addition to water-resistant fabric.

Quick checklist

  • Define the job the product needs to do.
  • Compare specifications that affect that job.
  • Check compatibility, dimensions and ongoing costs.
  • Verify current manufacturer instructions and warranty terms.
